EXPERIENCED ANIMAL KEEPER

EXPERIENCED ANIMAL KEEPER

SHALDON WILDLIFE TRUST, DEVON

THIS POST IS NOW FILLED

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a small zoo on the Devon coast, set in an acre of woodland.  We are the smallest member of BIAZA and EAZA. Despite this, we are active members of the zoo community and support conservation projects all over the word. Over the years we have gained a great deal of expertise in the breeding of many species, particularly small primates, and are regarded highly in this field.

We are going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and so are looking for a dynamic, knowledgeable individual to become a key member of our team. This role will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to develop and grow in a small team, with the aim to becoming a senior keeper.

We currently have a vacancy for an experienced animal Keeper.  This is a key role which will involve working on section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors with regular keeper talks and delivering our popular encounters and experiences.  The role of animal Keeper will also include coaching our volunteers and work experience placements so interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate others will be essential. We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with an interest in zoo animal management, education and conservation. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and have excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will have leadership qualities, experience of supervising a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks. A good understanding of risk assessments is required to ensure all members of staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures.

•        A minimum of 2 years zoo keeping experience, and an animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA would be advantageous.
After the completion of a six month probationary period, the option of accommodation may be offered.
•        Applicants should have a full driving licence as some duties include travelling by vehicle for collections and vet visits etc.
•        To include working weekends and bank Holidays in a roster system. On occasion in certain circumstances you may be required to work outside of normal hours.
•        The role is full time. Salary is paid monthly.  We provide uniform and 28 days holiday per annum including bank holidays.
