Deputy Head of Bird Displays – Colchester Zoo


Colchester Zoo is currently looking to recruit an experienced Deputy Head of Section to join their Bird Displays Team. With new developments and species planned over the next year, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in completely re-developing the current flying displays, and training some exciting new additions to the collection.

The post requires the successful applicant to fly, train and care for a wide range of bird species including Eagles, Owls, Kestrels, Kites, Buzzards, Hawks, Falcons, Hornbills, Macaws, Cranes, Ravens and Guinea Fowl. They will be expected to take part in the daily educational bird presentations and will have the responsibility of being principle trainer for a number of birds. As a Deputy Head of Section the applicant will be responsible for supervising staff in the absence of the Head of Section and assisting the Head in maintaining working and husbandry standards.

The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working a variety of species, as well as previous experience managing and supervising staff. The ability to take part in public presentations and flying bird displays is essential as well as excellent animal husbandry skills and high standards of animal care. Previous experience working with the above mentioned species is preferable but candidates with previous training experience with other animals will be considered.

Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.
