Animal Keeper - The Horniman Museum

Animal Keeper - The Horniman Museum

Salary scale G £20,002-£21,196 per annum
35 hours per week Tuesday-Saturday

The Horniman welcomes over 600,000 visitors to the Museum and Gardens each year. Our mission is to ‘encourage a wider appreciation of the world, its peoples and their cultures, and its environments’ and 2012 is an exciting year for us, as we reopen the Horniman Gardens following a £2m re-development project, funded through the HLF Parks for People programme.

This redevelopment project will unlock the educational potential of the Gardens through new Display Gardens, a Music Garden, a walk-through Animal Walk and a new Education and Community building, ‘The Pavilion’. The Animal Keeper will play a central role in the upkeep of the redesigned and newly interpreted Animal Walk.

As Animal Keeper you will take full responsibility for the animal husbandry and development of the stock in the Animal Walk. You will also help to interpret this living collection for the public through your input into exhibitions and events.

You will have knowledge of current animal husbandry best practice and will have hands on experience of caring for animals in a city farm/wildlife centre/zoo environment. You will possess a suitable qualification in animal care or zoo animal management.

In addition the role will involve interacting with the public in what will be a busy and popular attraction, so we are looking for a candidate with experience of dealing with the public in an informative and enthusiastic manner.

As a member of the Gardens team you will also support the Gardens Manager in overseeing the work of volunteers and apprentices in the Animal Walk and across the Gardens generally.
