Section
Head: Great Apes
Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society
(TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, holds a large variety of primates - every
species of great ape (gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, orang-utan) plus a range of
other primates including gibbons, lemurs, callitrichids, cebids and guenons to
name a few! We have impressive breeding
records for most of these species and recent changes to husbandry practices
have enabled more natural groupings and enclosure modifications. We have more
to do!
We are going through an exciting period of change as
this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to
help lead the teams forward. The new sections formed will be 'Apes' and
'Primates' following the merger of several sections.
We therefore have a vacancy for a Section Head on the
Great Apes section. This section will manage all the great apes groups including
chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans and the only bonobo group in the United
Kingdom. This is a key role which will
involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry,
managing and training staff, and developing the section and its activities in
line with the Zoo’s strategic aims.
We are seeking a high performing individual with a
proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 8
years’ experience as a keeper, with some supervisory responsibility, and
demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and
management of great apes. You must have
excellent communication skills and be committed to the continued professional
development of yourself and your team. A
proactive and positive approach, together with the ability to lead and motivate
a team is essential. An animal-related
qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, and experience of
chimpanzee and/or gorilla introductions would be advantageous.
The role is full time,
including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we
provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution.
