Role Profile

An exciting opportunity has arisen at ZSL London Zoo for Lead/Senior Animal Keeper in our Birds department. The role will involve the management of a team responsible for the day to day husbandry of a large and diverse collection of Birds, focusing on animal welfare, husbandry, record keeping and ensuring that exhibits are maintained to the highest standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Team Leader and Deputy Team leader in managing, mentoring and training staff.
  • Assist Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader in ensuring that the relevant systems (ZIMS etc.) are kept up to date and accurate.
  • Quality control and an ability to problem solve day to day work on section with appropriate communication and consultation with Team Leader and Deputy Team leader.
  • In consultation with other stakeholders, write and implement training processes and protocols, best practice guidelines and procedures for health and safety and animal husbandry purposes.
  • To Assist the Team Leader and Deputy Team leader in promoting the best welfare and Animal Health is observed by all team members
  • Observe the behaviour, health and security of animals and report any problems to the Team Leader or Deputy Team Leader including defects or repairs required to enclosures and relevant departments required to support work needed.
  • Cleaning and maintaining of exhibits and other designated areas.
  • Broad taxonomic knowledge on a range of bird species managed within zoological collections.
  • Knowledge of techniques used to handle specific animals should catch ups or veterinary procedures require this.
  • Be reliable and have good time-keeping and attendance record and able to demonstrate leadership and professionalism

Person Specification

  • Have great customer service and communication skills as there will be a need to engage and interact with visitors.
  • Applicants should have experience working with a range of Bird species with a passion for working with
  • Experience with breeding management and husbandry training of a wide range of Avian species
  • Have a qualification in a relevant field at university level and/or diploma in the DZMAA Keeper’s course.
