General Manager & Curator

General Manager & Curator

Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland

Do you have what it takes to lead the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary?

On 19th June 2019, Little White and Little Grey, two beluga whales previously living in an aquarium in China, arrived in Iceland as the first residents of the SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary – the world’s first such open water sanctuary.

The aims of our Sanctuary are threefold:

To enhance the welfare of its residents
To advance knowledge through research and education
To support protection of wild populations
By demonstrating the potential for open water sanctuaries we hope we will inspire captive facilities to consider a different future for the cetaceans in their care. More specifically, Klettsvik Bay has space to accommodate more belugas and we hope that some of those other belugas currently in aquariums around the world will join Little White and Little Grey at the Sanctuary and experience the benefits of an enhanced life as a result.

We are seeking an inspiring and experienced leader to head up our team at the Sanctuary to drive the Sanctuary’s development towards achieving its aims and securing its position as a world-leading sanctuary.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of the SEA LIFE Trust, you will lead the strategic development and long-term growth plan for the SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary.

Your experience will be key in ensuring the beluga whales who call the sanctuary home are provided with world class care and you will be accountable for all aspects of the operation and development of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary in line with its aims. That means we require a leader who can demonstrate both experience and passion in cetacean care and leading and motivating a diverse team with a range of experience and expertise.

About you

So who and what are we looking for? Importantly you will have a passion and belief in the role that open water sanctuaries can play in caring for captive cetaceans and an ability to share that passion to engage stakeholders and visitors in what we are aiming to achieve.

You will have significant leadership experience, either in a commercial or not for profit setting and experience of leading and inspiring multi-disciplinary teams. Superb influencing skills with a proven ability to work effectively with others to achieve outstanding results and excellent relationship building and communication skills are key. You will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of managing the welfare and training of captive cetaceans along with an understanding of managing the welfare and care of other animals in an aquarium or sanctuary environment.

Personal attributes will include excellent communication and motivational skills, a focus on solutions and the ability to manage relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders.
