Salary £20,000 per annum
Bristol Zoo Gardens is one of the UK’s leading zoos and is involved with over one hundred co-ordinated breeding programmes for threatened wildlife species.
The Veterinary Department has a vacancy for a veterinary intern to join a team of Head Vet, two Staff Vets and two Vet Nurses. This is a one year training position. We are seeking a motivated individual who can demonstrate a strong interest in zoological medicine and with at least 2 years clinical experience. Applicants must be qualified to practice veterinary medicine in the UK. Experience with exotic pets, wildlife or zoo animals would be an advantage.
The successful applicant will assist the BZG Veterinary team in maintaining a programme of preventive and curative veterinary care and nutrition in line with the Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice. This is a broad veterinary role which includes the day to day veterinary care of the animal collection and advice on breeding, husbandry and enclosure design as well as pathology and some laboratory work. The intern will also be expected to teach and supervise students and participate in the out of hours on call rota. There will also be an opportunity to work on research projects and produce publications.
