Experienced Primate
Keeper
The Saint Louis Zoo
is seeking an experienced keeper to join the Primate Unit, which is comprised
of the Jungle of the Apes (gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees) and the Primate
House (lemurs, Old and New World monkeys).
Initial placement will be in the Jungle of the Apes, although the
successful candidate will be cross-trained at the Primate House and may be
assigned there on a short- or long-term basis depending on the needs of the
unit; and duties also include required seasonal late night and event coverage.
Successful
candidates will be adaptable and flexible, able to manage a wide array of
duties and responsibilities, follow all protocols and foster a safe working
environment, and possess strong communication and teamwork skills. Keepers will perform a wide variety of
specialized work including daily animal care, exhibit/area cleaning,
enrichment, behavioral training, animal observations, animal health care,
documentation and record-keeping, minor exhibit maintenance, public
presentations and tours, and other related duties as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an animal-related field preferred. Previous paid keeper experience is required;
primate experience is desired. Knowledge
of animal behavior and good observation skills are important, and a strong
interest in behavior management and animal welfare is critical. Candidates must have the physical ability to
perform required duties as assigned, including standing for long periods of
time, lifting, bending, climbing, and working in all types of weather. A competitive candidate will actively support
