Phra Thong Island - South Thailand

Background Information

Phra Thong Island is located 200 km north of Phuket, in Kura Buri District, Phang Nga province. It is part of a group of three islands and is considered, even if there are only few turtles left, one of the main sea turtle nesting sites left along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand. These sites are under pressure from fishing activities, egg poaching and uncontrolled tourism development.

Since 1996, Naucrates has been running a conservation project in collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) with the help of many volunteers from all over the world who are coordinated by a field leader and assistants during each season. The main activities include monitoring nesting beaches, nest protection, behavioural observation, environmental education in the local school, awareness and education in the village, and public awareness with a few tourists. Duties

Field leader position:

- Coordinating the monitoring aspect of the work according to Naucrates' methodology; ensuring that all data collected is correctly collected and entered in Naucrates' databases
- Implementing nest protection measures as per the guidelines issued by Naucrates. These include relocating, protection and hatching observation
- Co-ordinating night surveys (if required) for observing nest hatching, protecting the hatchlings while going to the sea and taking biometric data
- Co-ordinating boat transfers according to the monitoring needs
- Training and supervising the volunteers working on the project area (talks about conservation and local flora and fauna will be schedule on a weekly basis)
- Training local villagers or other member of local organizations
- Conservation lessons in local school
- At the end of the project's activities compiling a final report according to Naucrates’ model.

Assistant position:

- help the field leader in the role of co-ordinating volunteers, monitoring activities and boat transfers
- organise awareness activities and lessons in the school and for volunteers
- English lessons, fund raising activities, creation of materials for a display area, workshops in the local school, etc.
- data entry and revision on a daily basis under the field leader supervision.
- Compile a final report at the end of the project according to Naucrates’ model and request


Requirements

Field leader:

- be over 22 years of age
- have a firm commitment to stay for the whole period of the project (5th January to 10th April).
- be able to work independently with minimum supervision
- be able to live in a rustic and remote environment (fishing village)
- have a good command of the English language (mandatory)
- be in good physical condition since walking long distances (15 km every day on the beach) and working for long hours under the heat of the sun is often needed
- have good communication and human resource management skills
- possess a BSc in Biology or a related field
- have experience in other turtle conservation projects (preferred)

Assistant:
- have experience in other turtle conservation projects or other fieldwork and be able to conduct survey on the filed.
- be in good physical condition since walking long distances (15kms a day) and working for long hours under the heat of the sun is often needed
- be able to work in a group
- possess a BSc in Biology or a related field, or be a student in a related field (e.g. biology, ecology, social sciences, environmental education)
- be able to live in a rustic and remote environment (fishing village) under warm and humid conditions;
- have a firm commitment of stay for the chosen period (essential to Naucrates)
- have a good command of the English language (mandatory).


Benefits/Costs

Field leader: The Field Leader covers their own travel expenses to and from the island. Accommodation and food is provided within the Lion Village at the Naucrates site. Naucrates provides a small monthly spending allowance.

Assistant: Assistants cover their own travel expenses to and from the island. Accommodation and food is provided within the Lion Village at the Naucrates site.
