Chester Zoo - Senior Keeper - Herpetology

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for a Herpetology Senior Keeper to join a busy and diverse section committed to advancing all aspects of zoo-based herpetological practice. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focussing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium with a diverse reptile and amphibian collection and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of herpetological husbandry, exhibition, diet and reproduction. They will be qualified to first degree level in a biological related science or equivalent practical experience and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and proven track-record of delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitry. They will be familiar with all aspects of managing venomous snakes. They will be skilled in the natural and artificial theming of exhibits. They will be competent in Microsoft Office packages. They will be able to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and have organising and problem solving skills. The successful candidate will have experience of supervising a team and working as a member of a team.

The successful candidate will desirably have Knowledge of ISIS ARKS. They will ideally have experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and working in field conservation programmes. They will ideally have experience and interest in the care and exhibition of invertebrates and an expertise in the care of tropical plants.

Salary is £17,166 initially, rising to £19,073 after satisfactory completion of the 6 month probationary period (subject to Job Evaluation).
