Officer: Zoological Society of London (ZSL), based primarily at Whipsnade
Zoo
The Zoological Society of London
is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, experienced zoo and wildlife veterinary
surgeon (MRCVS) to join the Veterinary Department as one of its Veterinary
Officers, on a 2-year Fixed Term Contract, responsible for the health and
welfare of all animals in ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The position
will be based primarily at Whipsnade.
As one of ZSL’s Veterinary
Officers you will work between both sites in order to meet the needs of the
Veterinary Department. Teaching of students, in particular of the veterinary
graduates on the MSc in Wild Animal Health, will form a substantial part of your
workload. In addition you will participate in the care and preventative medicine
programmes, research and conservation activities, including support for ZSL’s
conservation programme and native species reintroductions.
It is essential that you have a
proven track record in zoological and wildlife medicine, with excellent
communication and organisation skills, and a good publication, presentation and
research project history is desirable. A post-graduate qualification in this
field would be beneficial. Working knowledge of the statutory Health &
Safety and animal health regulations is essential, with some management
experience desirable. You must be a committed team player. Weekend and on-call
duties for both collections are shared.
A strong interest in the
veterinary management of the larger mammal species, being a committed proponent
of animal welfare and having an enthusiasm for continuing professional
development are also essential. A desire to work towards further qualification
(e.g. RCVS or European College of Zoological Medicine diplomas) is
anticipated.
