Position Summary
This position oversees two separate, but closely related programs. The Raptor Free Flight Program flies raptors (and a few other birds) seasonally, generally twice daily, in a unique and highly technical open-air demonstration setting. The Raptor Free Flight program is unique in the U.S. in that it de-emphasizes handlers and focuses tightly on the birds and their natural behaviors. The program takes place in a natural desert setting in which individual birds (and groups of Harris' hawks) free fly for up to 30 minutes at a time. The Interpretive Animal Collection Program maintains a separate collection of mammals, birds, reptiles and arthropods.  It trains and maintains a large corps of docent volunteers, and a small number of education staff, that handle these animals in static settings, primarily on the Museum grounds, but occasionally off-site.

Qualifications Summary: B.S. degree in the life sciences or related field. Post-graduate study or professional training in collections management and care highly desirable. Proven people management skills (with minimum two years paid experience) managing and motivating multiple employees required. Minimum of four years paid experience training and demonstrating interpretive animals for public education programs.  Experience must include small mammals, flighted birds, use of husbandry equipment (e.g. various jess, leash, tethering and perching systems), use of animal radio telemetry, and an understanding of the unique aspects of interpretive animal diet and nutrition.
