We are one of the UK’s leading wildlife rescue charities and exist to relieve the suffering of, and encourage respect towards British wildlife.  Based in the South-West we provide a public rescue, rehabilitation and release service for injured, sick and orphaned wildlife. We are also pursuing a learning and outreach programme and sharing knowledge to raise standards of wildlife care across the UK.

Following a fundamental review of the Charity’s activities, new plans are now being developed to take the Charity forward.  An exciting opportunity has arisen for an outstanding veterinary nurse to join our team to work alongside our Head of Animal Care Services and our skilled animal carer colleagues.

You will be a highly experienced Veterinary Nurse, and be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical competence and expertise.  You will be highly motivated, work well alongside other experienced animal care colleagues, whilst taking the responsibility for being the sole veterinary nurse on site.  You will work under the direction and supervision of our nominated local veterinary practice.
It is desirable you will have an interest and/or experience in the care and welfare of British wildlife, though not essential.  More importantly will be your ability to adapt to a different and often challenging environment, and be able to work alongside and play a full part in the wider animal care team.

Working closely with the park director, reporting and liaising with the wider management team you will be responsible for ensuring effective animal treatment, immunisation and screening policies are practiced. Practicing knowledge of Zims, Studbooks and comprehensive animal record keeping is beneficial.

When required, contribute to strategic planning discussions to ensure the smooth daily operations of Safari Zoo, identify opportunities and provide cultural sensitivity liaising with its charitable conservation operations around the world. Oversee any onsite emergencies and develop and maintain effective working relationships in regards to work procedures, employee relations and procurement related concerns.

Expansion of our work over two sites in China has created the need for another Bear Manager to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person. Highly motivated, experienced, and dedicated animal professional is required to work with rescued Asiatic black bears at our Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre in Sichuan Province, China.

The position holder will work as part of our Bear & Vet Team responsible for overseeing teams of local bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of the bears housed within the rescue centre. The position also involves working closely with Bear Team Supervisors and liaising with the resident veterinary team to manage various daily operations. The Bear Manager will report directly to the Bear & Vet Team Director.


Due to Chinese visa requirements, a university degree in a relevant field and proven practical experience of 3 to 5 years are essential for this position. 


Responsibilities
§        Co-coordinating various daily operations:
o        Animal care and management;
o        Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
o        Ordering animal food and other stock as required;
o        Supervising volunteers;
o        Maintaining bear behavior records & databases.

§        Preparing short reports for social media, supporters, or other recipients as required.
§        Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
§        Human resources:
o        Staff evaluations;
o        Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
o        Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.

Requirements
§        University degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal behaviour or related field
§        Three to five years work experience in a captive wild animal facility or similar working environment
§        Computer literacy, including Excel
§        Willingness to travel and work off site for periods of time as required
§        Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently
§        Fluent in English language
§        A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both foreign and local staff.
§        Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential

This role is responsible for supporting both the team and the Team Leader and ensuring high standards of animal husbandry and welfare at all times whilst ensuring that all exhibits and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards. Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity, Cambodia

The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) was established in 2003 by the Allwetterzoo Münster and the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP). It is the first nature conservation centre in Cambodia, located on 25 ha of land in the Phnom Kulen National Park, ca. 40 km north of Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor Wat. The goals of the ACCB are the rehabilitation of confiscated, mainly globally threatened wildlife and the conservation breeding of selected species, in combination with environmental education and capacity building of local communities as well as in-situ conservation and research.

The ACCB is currently looking to fill the position of Volunteer Keeper to join our team of eight Cambodian keepers, one expatriate Head Keeper and one expatriate Curator for a period of six months. This is a challenging position in a demanding environment suitable for a highly dedicated and motivated individual.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. Carry out all aspects of animal husbandry (e.g. daily routines, appropriate rehabilitation and release) related to the current stock of c. 350 mammals, birds and reptiles.
  2. Carry out building and maintenance work.
  3. Assist with training of Cambodian animal keepers and site support staff.
  4. Assist with education work and field research as required.
  5. Assist with the general daily operation of the centre.

Requirements:

  1. Proven experience in animal husbandry, ideally with a special interest in tortoises, turtles and birds.
  2. Good command of English.
  3. Excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to multi-task.
  4. Good practical skills.
  5. Physically fit and able to work in a hot and humid climate.
  6. Ability to live under simple conditions in a remote, rural and isolated area.

Conditions / remuneration:

Visa cost for the duration of the contract will be covered. Free shared accommodation at ACCB will be provided. On-site transport and internet are available, also for reasonable personal use. The work agreement is on a volunteer basis (not as staff of Münster Zoo or ZGAP), health or social insurance contributions will have to be covered by the volunteer as well as flights, food and daily needs.

Twycross Zoo is at a very exciting stage of development with the first phase of a 20 year masterplan already underway. The plan will see the zoo developing new habitats for a refreshed animal collection starting with Gibbon Forest in 2016.

We currently have a vacancy for an Education Officer within our Education Department. This role is on a temporary basis for a period of 6 months to support the Education Department during its peak time. Reporting to the Discovery & Learning Manager, the key purpose of this role is to prepare and deliver talks for groups of students from pre-school age up to undergraduate level and produce educational material for the Zoo.

You will also attend exhibitions, market the Zoo’s educational services and deal with enquiries and queries from the public and visitors.

The successful applicant will have a degree in a Zoo-related subject and will have significant teaching experience. Excellent presentation skills are essential along with an outgoing and confident personality. Experience in handling small animals (mammals and exotics) would be preferred.

This is a full-time position, 5 days out of 7, including weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

We’re currently on the search for an Education Officer to join our team specifically to deliver taught sessions for our primary school groups and outreach programme.

We’re looking for a creative mind, able to develop and deliver engaging, high quality curriculum-linked workshops and resources for school, college and university groups.  You’ll need a degree in a related field and a teaching qualification or equivalent experience in teaching a wide range of ages and abilities.

We’re looking for someone confident in using IT packages, interactive whiteboards, tablets, presentation software and audio visuals.  You’ll also need to be able to communicate complex concepts in an innovative and practical way.  And, we’re a busy team so you’ll definitely need good organisational skills - time management, administration, workload planning and meeting deadlines.

A full UK driving license is essential.

This position is subject to a DBS check.

It’s a full-time, permanent position, primarily Monday-Friday but may include evening and weekend work.  We are offering a salary of £14,040 per annum.

The continued growth in students wishing to study Animal Welfare, Veterinary nursing and related courses means there has never been a more exciting opportunity to join Moulton College.

We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to work within our purpose built facilities at our academy sites. The role will require travel to other college locations.

Duties will include all routine tasks required of animal husbandry to maintain the health, care and welfare of a range of companion and exotic animals. In addition you updating and maintaining records, preparing stock and equipment for use in practical classes, support lecturers and supervise students on commercial experience. Shift patterns operate between 6am – 8pm, lone working and weekend working is a requirement of this post.

A relevant Animal Care/Animal Welfare qualification is essential, as well as experience in a similar role working with a range of species. Ideally you will have specialist aquatic management skills and or herpetology experience. You will be able to demonstrate an in depth working knowledge of current industry practices. Tayto Park, established in 2010, is a dynamic zoo, adventure & theme park located in Co. Meath, Ireland and less than one hour from Dublin.

Successful applicants will be experienced animal rangers and have at least five years full-time experience working with a variety of taxa, including big cats.  Education to include English and biological science. Applicants who hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or equivalent degree would be preferred.

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a small zoo on the Devon coast. Set in an acre of woodland, we are the smallest member of BIAZA and EAZA. Despite this we are active members of the zoo community and support conservation projects all over the word. Over the years we have gained a great deal of expertise in the breeding of many species, particularly small primates, and are regarded highly in this field.

We are currently advertising for voluntary internships for a period of 9-12 months working with our keeping department. Shaldon Wildlife Trust is open every day and the placements will be full time i.e. a five day working week including some weekends. The main role of the keeping interns will be to attend the husbandry requirements of the animal collection as directed by the Head Keeper in charge.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that Shaldon Wildlife Trust cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. To ensure that interns are provided with valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement. 

Objectives of the placement
-        To gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department.
-        To apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research project.
-        To reflect on training and experience throughout the placement.

Anticipated tasks/training provided
-        Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision, enclosure modification etc.
-        Observations of animals and recording of relevant information.
-        Training in basic research methods.
-        Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner.
-        Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the head keeper.
-        Training in animal-management related computer software.
-        Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practice.

Skills Required
-        A qualification or enrolment on an animal science related discipline would be desirable.
-        Previous animal-related work experience.
-        Good communication skills.
-        Adaptable to different working environments.
-        Able to work in a team and independently.
-        Physically fit for the demands of the post.

Award winning Blackpool Zoo is looking to fill a key position within its Animal Department.

Experienced Primate Keeper (Ref No- AD/PK/16)

Blackpool Zoo is looking for an experienced primate keeper to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of their Primate Section. They will also help in developing and moving forward the section within the framework of the animal department's aims and objectives in a new and exciting period within Blackpool Zoo’s history. The section currently maintains over 20 species of primates including Red-fronted Lemur, King Colobus, Red Titi, Goeldi’s Monkey, Emperor Tamarin, Black Howler Monkey, L’Hoest’s Monkey, De Brazza Monkey, Pileated Gibbon, Bornean Orang-utan and Western Lowland Gorilla.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years primate keeping experience. Although experience with great apes is not essential, it would be desirable.

We offer a competitive salary of £18,328.00 per annum and the opportunity to further your career within the zoological world.
