Position: WZ Deputy Team Leader – Large Hoofstock (Full-Time / Permanent)
Salary: £31,187 (Inclusive of Weekend Enhancement)
Location: ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Whipsnade, Bedfordshire – LU6 2LF

Overview of role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen at ZSL and we are looking to recruit a Deputy Team Leader for the Large Hoofstock section at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, which includes reticulated giraffe, white and greater one horned rhino, common and pygmy hippo, Grevy’s zebra and several species of antelope. The role will be supporting the Team Leader with the day to day operational running of the department and managing the department in their absence. The successful candidate will manage the team, supervise volunteers and will work closely with all members of staff to ensure best animal care and practice is adhered to, develop projects and to help achieve ZSL’s strategic aims.

Main responsibilities will include:
Mentor, train and enthuse junior members of a team.
Instruct and oversee best practice within the section and supporting the Team Leader in ensuring agreed standards of work are met.
Familiarity and compliance with all health and safety protocols and documentation. This includes emergency procedures, risk assessment and safe working practices.
Maintain high standards of hygiene, equipment care and house-keeping as routine part of daily duties
Familiarity with other ZSL departments and an ability to contact key people in emergencies e.g. duty electrician out of hours.

Person Specification:
Proven track record in the husbandry and management of a wide variety of ungulates including animal moves, diet, training and enrichment.
An ability to manage and prioritise a diverse workload.
Demonstrate innovation and initiate new ideas in conjunction with the Team Leader
Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate to colleagues of all levels regardless of their position.
Support agreed management decisions and communicate this effectively to staff
Apply appropriate judgement when discussing confidential or commercially sensitive information.
Use initiative in identifying and dealing with a problem and taking responsibility to make sure the problem is resolved completely. This means the ability to trouble-shoot problems as they arise.
Ability to maintain high standards of publicly viewed exhibits.
Willingness to provide assistance for call-outs and emergencies outside of normal working hours (within reason).
Maintain a professional and positive attitude and level of communication with colleagues.
