Animal Keeper

Animal Keeper

Looking for a new and exciting challenge in the new year?

Almond Valley is one of West Lothian's favourite family attractions and the farm is one of its most popular features. Mill farm is home to a range of farm livestock and smaller animals. Throughout the summer we offer a daily programme of “animal encounters” when visitors are introduced to the animals, and can learn a little about them.

We’re now entering an exciting period of time with lots of development on the farm, so we are recruiting for an animal keeper that will contribute and help to continue to raise the bar in animal welfare standards and to also help maximise the quality of our visitor’s day out. This will include most aspects of the care of livestock and the operation of the farm, involving the usual range of feeding, mucking-out, cleaning and other husbandry duties along with basic site maintenance works and public talks/demonstrations.

Candidates must have appropriate experience of working with farm livestock or hoof-stock, (as well as the smaller domestic animals), and possess the necessary insight and training to work safely and effectively in an animal attraction. Experience of operating farm machinery would be desirable. This is an active, manual role that requires appropriate physical fitness.

Much of the work takes place in the public eye, so a warm personality and a welcoming manner is essential when interacting with visitors, along with prioritising jobs and allowing the public to enjoy their day out. It is also necessary to have the knowledge and confidence to address large audiences that assemble for many of the demonstrations and events.

This is a full time position, initially on a 1 year contract, normally working 9-5 five days in seven, which will include weekend working. We might consider offering roles on a part time basis. Wage rates meet national living wage.

Desirable:

Experience with farm animals

Experience in public speaking

Experience in working at a public/tourist attraction

Animal related qualification

Essential:

Full driving license

1 years experience in working with animals in a tourist attraction (or open to the public)

Appropriate physical fitness

If you would like to join our passionate and friendly animal team at this exciting time, please apply now by sending a full CV, plus a covering note outlining the particularly qualities that would make you an excellent candidate for the post.
