Saving Wildcats Conservation Manager (In-Situ)

The role
To plan, organise, develop and manage In-Situ aspects of the Saving Wildcats (#SWAfroLIFE) reinforcement project in line with the project plan. Working with the Saving Wildcat Project Manager, Saving Wildcat Ex-situ Manager, the Saving Wildcat project team, the veterinary team and other relevant stakeholders and contractors to achieve the project objectives. Provides specialist field monitoring, post-release monitoring and data analysis support the project team whilst contributing to the delivery of the Society’s mission and aims. All in support of RZSS’ Vision and mission.
Some of the things you'll do
  • Works with a high degree of autonomy, involved in planning the workload for the programmes whether it be RZSS staff, contractors, volunteers or partners.
  • Prioritising workload on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis, working to timeframes set by the project framework.
  • Work with the conservation outcomes of the project in mind at all times.
  • In conjunction with the Saving Wildcat Project Manager, plans strategically for the long-term future of the project. e.g. may have to manage competing strategic priorities.
  • Is able to establishes own milestones, deadlines and team objectives and delegates responsibilities appropriately.
  • Represents Saving Wildcat (and demonstrate the core values of RZSS) at external meetings and communicates regularly with the public, a range of stakeholders and other relevant organisations.
  • Responsible for collection, handling and analysis of scientific monitoring data and storage systems relating to the In-Situ side of the project.
  • Oversees the development of all in-situ management protocols.

What we're looking for
  • You'll have an academic qualification (min BSc) in science, conservation or equivalent.
  • Sufficient scientific knowledge to manage the design, implementation and dissemination of conservation research projects across in-situ and reintroduction disciplines.
  • Detailed knowledge of field monitoring techniques (camera trapping, GPS collars, GIS) and data management following best practice guidance.
  • Competent in the use of GIS and relevant statistical modelling software (e.g. R package).
  • An ability to manage project budgets often in line with funder requirements with many complex and variable components.
  • Sufficient scientific knowledge of species translocations, population viability and associated challenges.
