Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is an international charity working globally towards our mission of saving species from extinction. We wish to recruit a Head of the Mammal Department, to be based at our headquarters in Jersey.
The Role
Reporting to Head of Animal Collection
- To maintain and shape a mammal collection that fulfils the Trust’s conservation aims through managing captive populations, staff training and research and that also provides a valuable, entertaining visitor experience
- To teach visiting students practical aspects of animal management, instigate research projects and support others conducting research
- To support the delivery of Durrell’s Conservation Strategy, within the animal collection in Jersey and overseas
- To ensure that the husbandry of the collection conforms to our high standards of animal welfare and ethical guidelines
- To manage and motivate departmental staff and aid them in their professional development
- To manage the collection and departmental resources within a specified budget
- To ensure the smooth running of the department, maximising the department's contribution to the Trust's strategy to save species from extinction
Specification
- Extensive experience (minimum 10 years) of working within a zoological collection
- BSc (Hons) Zoology or related subject desirable
- Proven experience of leading a team and excellent interpersonal skills
- Wide knowledge of biology, taxonomy, ecology and the captive requirements of the mammal species for which the post is responsible
- Good verbal and written communication skills and experience of delivering presentations
- Proven experience with field conservation projects
- Excellent organisational ability and experience in project management
- A high level of health and fitness as aspects of the job are physically demanding
