Deputy Section Head, Elephants


Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

A position has become available for a Deputy Section Head keeper to join the Life Sciences Directorate. This role provides a unique opportunity to join the Zoo at a time when it is undergoing an exciting period of change. Reporting to the Section Head of the elephant section you will be part of the team responsible for our herd of Asian elephants and play an active role in developing the department in line with the Zoo’s strategic aims. The successful candidate will be required to:

• Supervise and develop staff
• Demonstrate that they have either attained a relevant animal management qualification or be prepared to take the Advanced National Certificate for the Management of Zoo Animals
• Have good communication skills and be able to communicate with visitors on either a one-to-one basis or presenting to a larger audience
• Have a flexible work attitude
• Work as part of a progressive thinking team

This is a hands-on role and applicants must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to motivate a team. Substantial experience in animal management is necessary for this position, with experience of working with elephants being essential. Experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work would also be advantageous. A proactive and positive approach together with good communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution and the possibility of on-site accommodation.
