The Animal Curator position is responsible for managing assigned areas of the living collection, to include considerations of animal health and welfare, collection planning, operating plans, budget recommendations, selecting and supervising assigned personnel and actively fostering constructive attitudes, communication and a team orientation among staff. This individual actively collaborates with the Director of Animal Management in the presentation and development of guest experiences that support The Phoenix Zoo’s mission and core values.
Essential duties include providing oversight and supervision to Collection Managers for the management of assigned staff and collection. Staff management includes performance appraisal documentation and recommendation of disciplinary or corrective actions. The Curator will also participate in the recruitment and selection of new personnel as required. The Curator is expected to actively collaborate with other business unit staff to insure that husbandry, behavioral management practices, presentations and special events support the designated guest experience. They will also provide input into the assessment of existing physical facilities and the development of capital improvement and modification requests and in the planning and oversight of short-term improvements, minor repairs, and modifications as assigned.
Qualifications for this position include a minimum five years prior management experience within an AZA accredited institution or similar zoological institution, a Bachelor level degree in life science or equivalent job experience and strong managerial skills. The capability to multitask and strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are also important. Applicants should be able to lift up to 30 pounds, bend, stoop, crawl and locomote over uneven surfaces and work in extreme weather conditions. Applicants must have a valid driver license and be able to pass pre-employment background checks, drug test, and annual TB tests.
