Position Title: Veterinary Services Manager Australia Zoo

Department: Australia Zoo Veterinary Department

Reports to: Director, Curator

Direct Reports: Veterinary Nurse, Associate Veterinarian

Indirect Reports: Animal Husbandry staff as required

Location: Beerwah, Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Short term contract: 12 months contract, with the possibility to extend further

Commencement: May 2011

Salary: 63-93K, salary will depend on the successful applicant’s level of relevant experience

Australia Zoo is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Veterinarian with Zoo and Wildlife experience to fill the position of Senior Veterinarian for a period of 12 months. There will be an opportunity to negotiate an extended contract to follow on from the 12 month contract.

The position of Veterinarian at Australian Zoo requires the provision of veterinary services to All Zoo animals, and any and all other duties as may, from time to time, be requested by senior staff. These duties are expected to be performed at a high standard and with a high level of compassion. Animal welfare considerations are paramount in the treatment and veterinary management of patients and are affected minimally by commercial or financial considerations.

Zoo Veterinarians are required to show a high level of professionalism, commitment and dedication to their roles, which may include long hours, after-hours calls, night-time work and weekend/public holiday work. In return for this commitment the position allows a high degree of professional satisfaction, ability to contribute to an altruistic cause, the opportunity to contribute to field-based projects and research. The Zoo is well equipped and serviced, with an Australia Zoo specific vet nurse.

Our patients are generally Australia Zoo captive animals, but can include translocation and other management of wildlife and captive species. However, under no circumstances should animal welfare suffer and all practice will be done in the best interests of the animal. The position requires good cooperation & communication with the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

The Senior Veterinarian is expected to manage the Australia Zoo veterinary services department and in doing so monitor, maintain and protect the health of the Zoo collection and ensure that an excellent standard of health care is provided for the Zoo collection animals by providing veterinary services including:

· Manage staff and staff training, liaise with management and oversee stocking and maintenance of veterinary facilities

· Treat sick and injured collection animals

· Plan and implement preventative health programs for collection animals

· Implement and maintain quarantine protocols

· Review diet plans and investigate nutrition-related disease

· Conduct post mortems on deceased collection animals

· Investigate and manage any disease outbreaks

· In the course of carrying out veterinary functions review, and where applicable update or change practices and procedures

· Support research goals and projects

· Provide support and training to keeping staff in medicating and treating animals


Veterinary work at Australia Zoo will include indoors or outdoors work. Veterinarians may also be required to travel (at the expense of Australia Zoo) domestically and internationally.


Selection Criteria:

· Veterinary degree registrable in Queensland.

· At least 12 months experience working with wildlife and exotic species including avian and reptilian species.

· Experience working in senior or management positions.

· Experience and understanding of conservation and zoological issues.

· Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team effectively.

· Demonstrated planning and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work and meet established timeframes.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships.

· Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in database applications and Microsoft Office.

· Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.

· Current Driver’s License recognized by Queensland authorities.

· Current Queensland Firearms License or ability to obtain.
