Phoenix Zoo - Collection Manager- Primates



Under direction of the Animal Curator, the Collection Manager is responsible for the organization and operation of an assigned trail through effective management of staff, animal care and facilities. This individual will supervise and manage a team of keepers, and must be a self-motivated, team focused individual with the ability to lead, coach, manage, and schedule a professional staff while maintaining exhibition excellence. This position will be responsible for the oversight of our new Orangutan facilities opening in spring 2011.

Essential duties include providing quality guest service to both internal and external guests and creating, fostering and maintaining a positive team orientated work environment through effective leadership communication and cooperative professional interactions. The Collections Manager will supervise daily operations including staff recruitment, scheduling, payroll, and performance management; provide training, coaching and mentoring to encourage staff development and inspect, evaluate and maintain the care and well-being of the animals in the trail. This individual will apply designated husbandry, nutritional and behavioral management standards and assist in the development of reproductive and exhibition strategies. They will ensure husbandry and behavioral management practices support the Phoenix Zoo’s mission and core values through active collaboration in the development and presentation of interpretive material, messaging and guest experiences. Additionally this manager will collaborate with internal departments and staff to identify and coordinate repairs, renovations and improvements of exhibitions. A Collection Manager serves and supports the business unit as a representative as needed and may conduct tours and assist with public/media requests. The manager will perform keeper duties as needed throughout Zoo and manage non-routine events and insure emergency response preparedness.

Candidates for this position must have a four-year college degree in life science or equivalent experience and four years experience with exotic animal husbandry at an accredited AZA institution or equivalent. An applicant must have successfully demonstrated leadership and management skills and a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience. Collections Managers are able to successfully solve complex problems and serve as resource to others. Other qualifications include proven organizational skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks/requests and meet deadlines in a professional manner, excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment. Collection Managers must have the ability to perform all keeper activities to maintain animal collection including: lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces and work in extreme weather conditions.
