Auckland Zoo - New Zealand Bird Keeper

Auckland Zoo - New Zealand Bird Keeper.

This is a great opportunity to join the Life Sciences team at Auckland Zoo and be part of an organisation which aims to focus the Zoo’s resources to benefit conservation, and provide exciting visitor experiences, which inspire and empower people to take positive action for wildlife and the environment.

Auckland Zoo has started constructing the new $15 million NZ fauna precinct – Te Wao Nui. Te Wao Nui is a journey through the flora, fauna and culture of Aotearoa/ New Zealand and is the largest single development the zoo has ever undertaken, covering approximately 25% of the zoo’s footprint. Te Wao Nui will provide many new opportunities for the zoo to contribute to the conservation of New Zealand wildlife, both directly and indirectly. It will feature six zones displaying over 60 native animal species (including invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds) and over 110 native plant species.

The New Zealand Bird Keeper works as part of the team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of a diverse range of New Zealand bird species and the short-tailed bats.
A certificate in captive wild animals or an equivalent tertiary qualification in biological sciences / conservation is required and candidates should have strong teamwork skills, and comprehensive knowledge of the management and husbandry of a range of bird species. This experience should include bird artificial incubation and rearing as well as implementing bird training, conditioning and behavioural enrichment programmes. Auckland Zoo is currently developing its field conservation programme, so the successful candidate will be expected to spend some time working on conservation projects outside the zoo gates. Prior experience in such programmes would therefore be an advantage.

Public speaking is part of every keeper's role, so we're also looking for a confident communicator. This is a full time role, working on a 7-day rotating roster system including weekends and public holidays. A high level of energy and physical fitness will enable you to meet the daily challenges of the role.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a world class organisation, contribute to conservation and progress your career.

Please note: This role is deemed a safety sensitive position and will require pre-employment drug testing.

Interested applicants should follow this link to the Auckland Council website where they will be able to find a full position descriptions and instructions for the application process:
