Curator of Mammals

General Information:
Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) is located in Al Shahaniya, State of Qatar is a private breeding centre for threatened animal species. AWWP houses approx 2000 animals of 90 different species, some of them are critically endangered like the Spix’s and Lear’s macaw, Queen of Bavaria conure, Addra gazelle, Erlanger’s gazelle and the Addax antelope. Two species (Flame bowerbird and Beira antelope) at AWWP are kept no where else in captivity. An international team of veterinarians, curators, biologists and keepers (around 45 staff) run the preservation.General Job Description for the Curator of Mammals:
The Head of the Mammal Department is responsible for the entire Mammal, Fish and Reptile collection,which includes approx 1500 animals of 40 species; mainly antilopinae, caprinae, neotraginae, equidae,felidae, primates, testudinidae.
The duties are:
-Mammal Department staff management, inclusive work and holiday schedules for 22 animal keepers and assistants in the Mammal Department.
- Training and education of the staff.
-Coordination of breeding management.
-Ensuring a proper individual animal identification system and systematic data administration.
-Preparation, implementing and updating feeding schedules.
-Food order and administration.
-Running the Mammal Nursery Unit for orphaned and neglected neonates.
-Running a live-food animal unit, where rodents and rabbits are being bred for food for other animals.
-Encourage scientific work and projects related to mammals.
-International correspondence including animal shipments and breeding loan arrangements.
-Planning and carrying out animal shipments.
-Involvement in enclosure building and design.
-Participation and initiation of wildlife conservation projects.
The successful candidate must fulfill the following requirements:
-Have an internationally recognised higher degree in Biology/ Zoology
-Having excellent communication skills in written and oral English, complete PC literate with knowledge about the most common used software in administrations of zoological collections
-Minimum of 5 years working experience in a zoological collection as a Curator
- Ability to work in a multicultural team
The candidate must name three persons of references with information of telephone and e-mail addresses, allowing AWWP to contact them with further inquiries if desired. The references have to be related to the candidates past work in zoological collections or with clear relevance for the possible future work as a Zoological Director at AWWP.
Working conditions:
Free Accommodation at AWWP. Four weeks holiday with one paid air fee home per year. Six-day working week with flexible working hours depending on the season. AWWP will offer a two year-contract with an initial probationary period of three months. Salary will be based on prior experience and will be discussed after more application details are known.
