PH.D.-STIPEND - Copenhagen Zoo

PH.D.-STIPEND - Copenhagen Zoo

The snake spectacle as a model for contact lenses –functional, morphological and pathological characterisation

Copenhagen Zoo in collaboration with the Institute of Ocular Pathology, Copenhagen University and Department of Zoo physiology, Aarhus University, is offering one joint industrial PhD stipend. The position is offered for a period of three years. The candidate is ecpected to start September 2011.

Study description:
Instead of eyelids, snakes have a transparent spectacle covering the cornea, somewhat similar to a contact lens. The project will focus on characterizing the morphology of this unique structure in health and disease, and determining its refractive power. The ambition is to better understand occular disease in snakes, as well as to develop novel ideas for contact lens design.

We propose a three step approach: 1. normal anatomy, 2. pathological conditions, and 3. Rephractory function of the spectacle. The actual project plan will depend on the candidate selected.

Qualifications:
• Candidates are required to have a D.V.M. or equivalent.
• Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills are essential.
• Documented research and publication experience would be considered a distinct advantage.
• Good communication skills, both oral and written in English are a must, and ability to speak a Scandinavian language is an advantage.
• Interest in histology and morphology is a requirement, but experience is not essential.

As this stipend is funded through the Industrial PhD program, the requirements of this program must be met. (see: http://en.fi.dk/research/industrial-phd-programme/guidelines-for-the-industrial-phd-programme/4-admission-requirements)
