ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Texas State Aquarium provides high quality, entertaining programming through
education, conservation, and wildlife rehabilitation. We strive to provide our
guests with an exciting, educational,and memorable experience.
The Trainer I for
the Bird/Mammal department will provide proper care and training to the bird
and mammal collection.
Other duties include
but are not limited to:
- Clean and maintain assigned exhibits and support areas.
- Observe animal behavior and report unusual/abnormal behavior to supervisor.
- Prepare animal diets and feed according to established procedures.
- Handle all raptors according to established procedures.
- Use telemetry equipment as assigned.
- Deliver all show segments except the African Serval.
- Cope and talon trim all raptors excluding the bald eagle as assigned.
- Net/cast all birds excluding the bald eagle as assigned.
- Assist senior staff in animal restraint and veterinary procedures
- Weigh and transport all trained animals excluding the African Serval as assigned.
- Enter data into TRACKS.
- Plan and direct the work of volunteers in primary areas of responsibility.
- Communicate procedures and work duties to support staff when absent.
- Work all auxiliary functions in the department as assigned.
- Contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of department areas
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree
in biology, psychology or related field from a four year college or university
is preferred with one year of experience in a public aquarium/zoo. Any
combination of education and experience would likely produce the required
knowledge, skills and abilities.
