Animal Herder II
This is a technical position under the supervision of the Animal Curator responsible for the daily operation of the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Program at Salmonier Nature Park. Responsibilities will include: care and husbandry of captive wildlife; capture, care and transport of injured, orphaned and problem wildlife; assisting with the implementation of standard operating policy and procedures; ensuring the program complies with specified policies, procedures and humane animal care practices. Work is of a highly physical nature and involves the routine duties in animal care such as daily feeding; cleaning of housing and maintenance of breeding colonies; managing inventory of feeding, medical supplies and other materials; maintaining wildlife care records; monitoring and inspecting animal care infrastructure and initiating repair or replacement action as required. Working occasionally independently or assisting senior animal care technicians you, will be required to provide emergency, acute and specialized animal care including medical procedures, chemical immobilization and restraint; observing, collecting and recording information on animals for special research programs; consulting and liaising with Conservation Officials; participating in field research; assisting with training and delivery of training materials for Care and Rehabilitation Program and other related duties.
Qualifications
Knowledge of and experience with natural resource management, care and husbandry of captive wildlife, wildlife rehabilitation, drug immobilization, First Aid and Wilderness First Aid. Candidates should possess good communication skills, the ability to work independently and show initiative. These qualifications would normally be acquired through graduation from a recognized educational institution with course work in resource management or animal care. Training and certification under the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council or other animal husbandry/care is an asset. Equivalencies may be considered.
