Animal Keeper – Animal Encounters

The Department of Animal Welfare & Conservation is currently recruiting for a dedicated, reliable, confident team member. This position is offered on a permanent, full time basis.

Working as part of the successful Animal & Welfare Department you will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment for both yourself and the public by adhering to associated risk assessments and protocols without exception.

Working as part of the demonstrations team, you will be expected to deliver high quality educational and entertaining displays of natural behaviours. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with and train an exciting collection of birds, reptiles and mammals, including, but not exclusively; raptors, psittacines and Californian sea lions; and be a part of continually developing and improving the daily displays.

The zoo animal management qualification (DMZAA) is desirable but not essential for this position, however; the successful candidate would be expected to work towards achieving this qualification.

The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual who has a good understanding of animal behaviour and previous experience training and working with a variety of species. The ability to take part in public presentations is essential as well as exceptional animal husbandry skills, high standards of animal care and excellent communication skills. Previous experience with the species we hold is preferable however those candidates’ with comparable experience will be considered.

Preference will be given to applicants that have worked and/or volunteered within the following fields:  Zoo’s, Safari Park’s, Farming/Agriculture & Equestrian.

Applicants will need to be flexible as regular weekend working is required to meet the needs of the business.
