Salary is national minimum/living wage.

plus a living out allowance of £2,600 per annum (pro rata), if on-site accommodation is not required or available.

 

Howletts works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to the conservation of rare and endangered animals through breeding and reintroduction programmes. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide range of species from Pied tamarins to Gelada baboons and contribute to in-situ conservation programmes. Our continued involvement in Java means that there is a possibility to become involved in the reintroduction of Javan gibbons and langurs in Java.

 

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of primate keepers. They must possess good animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the primate species in the park. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake basic enclosure furnishing, maintenance tasks and record keeping. We are looking for a keeper who will be proud of our contribution to conservation and keen to tell visitors about it. You will have the opportunity to develop your professional skills and abilities. Candidates must have a good level of physical fitness as this role is physically demanding, and a full valid driving license is essential to the role. It would be advantageous to possess a varied skillset including general maintenance, and a recognised Zoo Animal Management qualification.

 

Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for talks and encounters with the public. We provide extensive staff training and will offer the opportunity to develop your professional skills and abilities.

 

This is a full-time, permanent role working 40 hours per week, generally 8am to 5pm, including weekends and bank holidays.

 

The Person

We are looking for an individual who is hard working and will be a good communicator within the team. Will contribute ideas and be keen to learn from experienced team members. You will need to be confident around all types of primates with a hands-on approach to the restraint and handling of animals where necessary.

A flexible approach to working hours is essential in any animal job.
