Gorilla Keeper

Gorilla Keeper

Salary: From NMW to £21,100 per annum (£10.14ph) DOE

Plus a living out allowance or £2,600 per annum pro rata, if onsite accommodation is not required or available.

Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated near Canterbury in Kent, is home to the largest captive breeding group of Western Lowland Gorillas in the world with over 140 births to date. Through our charity, The Aspinall Foundation, we manage and protect over a million acres of Congo and Gabon into which we are reintroducing gorillas. Gorillas from our collection in the UK have joined orphans from the bushmeat trade to create this population. This is a rare opportunity to become part of this cutting edge conservation initiative.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of gorilla keepers. The ideal candidate will have experience gained in a mainstream zoological collection with great apes – preferably gorillas. An awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare is also needed.

Candidates must have a good level of physical fitness as this is a physically demanding role. A full valid  driving licence is essential.

It would also be advantageous to have some experience of driving tractor/trailers and possess a varied skillset including general maintenance and a recognised Zoo Animal Management qualification.

Working 40 hours over a 5-day week, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours which will include weekends and bank holidays. All applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Closing date: Friday 18 June 2021.
