Primate Keeper

MAMMAL KEEPER
Primate Team

Chester Zoo is the UK’s No.1 top zoo and is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.
The zoo is currently expanding with the exciting new ‘Islands’ site opening in spring 2015.  This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.  As a result of this growth, we have a fantastic opportunity for two Mammal Keepers to join our primate team.
The post will involve the daily care and management of a variety of primate species ranging from Macaques, Spider monkeys and Mandrills, to smaller species such as Lemurs, Marmosets and Tamarins.
Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.
We are looking for someone with proven experience of working with primates and other relevant mammal species and experience of working in a zoo or safari park.  The successful candidate will be educated to HND or degree level in Zoo Animal Management/Zoological Science, or have the equivalent experience.
Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages is required for this role in order to maintain accurate records.  Experience of working within strict Safe Working Practices, working at heights and working in and next to deep water moats is also essential.
Experience of dealing with the public, media and public speaking would be advantageous and the ideal candidate would also have experience of implementing environmental enrichment and operant conditioning.  Practical knowledge of using power tools would be useful for this role and a full UK driving licence is also desirable.
Salary is £16,984 per annum for a 40 hour week on a rota basis (including some weekends and bank holidays).
