Curator of Animals

The successful
applicant will have overall responsibility for the animal department. The
collection includes African lion, jaguar, Amur tiger, Southern cheetah,
European brown bear, Iberian wolf, tapir, ostrich, capybara, vervet monkeys,
lechwe, meerkat, coati, and agouti.
The Curator is
responsible for the day to day management of a team of seven permanent staff
and a large volunteer team including interns from further and higher education
establishments, ensuring the highest standards of welfare, husbandry and
staff/public safety. The successful
applicant will also have extensive experience in the capture, restraint,
quarantine and transport of animals and be expected to ensure the accurate
maintenance of all animal records and departmental administration.
The curator will
also be expected to have a comprehensive grasp of the commercial constraints
under which the zoo operates and support other senior managers in furthering
the zoo’s commercial aims.
In this senior
management role, the curator will be expected to liaise with other senior
management in the delivery of the zoo’s obligations under licensing and other
statutory requirements, as well as its aims in collection planning/management
including the design and modification of enclosures, dietary plans, health
surveillance, biosecurity, and the development and implementation of research
projects.
This is a permanent
position with a start date as soon as is possible. Salary is dependent on
qualifications and experience.
