Aquarium Research Technician
Salary: £22,417 - £25,217 per annum - Grade 4
Applications are invited for the above position from
March 2020 working on the Natural Environment Research Council funded
Artificial Light Impacts on Coastal Ecosystems (ALICE) project.
The
ALICE project combines world leading expertise in ecological light pollution,
larval biology, marine benthic ecology, tropical marine biology, and optical
oceanography from across the UK’s premier marine science research centres to
tackle fundamental gaps in our understanding of coastal ecosystem responses to
Artificial Light At Night (ALAN).
You
will work with Dr Thomas Davies, specially appointed research staff, and other School
staff members to support the delivery of laboratory and field experiments that
quantify the impacts of ALAN on the early life history of temperate marine
invertebrates, and species interactions. You will be responsible for assisting
the delivery of outputs for the ALICE project under the direct supervision of
more senior staff by installing, maintaining and operating laboratory and field
equipment; assisting with the collection of scientific data from laboratory and
field experiments; maintaining the health and welfare of invertebrate adults
and larvae kept in controlled environments; ensuring compliance with relevant
health and safety regulations; and assisting with sourcing and purchasing items
for delivering scientific objectives.
You
should be educated to A level in biological or environmental sciences related
subjects or possess equivalent experience. A degree in Marine Biology/Zoology,
Aquaculture or related subject, or equivalent experience of working in these
areas would be beneficial. You will be experienced in the husbandry of marine
invertebrate adults and larvae in controlled environments, maintaining marine
invertebrate breeding programmes and installing, monitoring and/or maintaining
seawater quality control systems.
The
expected commencement date for this position will be no later than 1 April
2020.
This is
a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis for 24
months due to the nature of the funding.
