Beluga Care Team Member
We are the Beluga
Whale Sanctuary and we are part of the SEA LIFE Trust!
We’re looking for a
knowledgeable and passionate Beluga Care Team Member to join the team in the
Beluga Whale Sanctuary, based on Heimaey Island, located off the coast of
southern Iceland.
About the role
In this role your
main responsibility will be the management of our Beluga Whale’s welfare,
ensuring consistently high standards of animal care are met. You will play a
key role in the continual development of the Beluga Sanctuary in line with the
agreed development plan. You will also support animal welfare operations
including duties related to our aquarium, life support systems and puffin care.
With working knowledge of Life Support Systems, you will ensure correct
maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufactures recommendations
and swift resolution of problems, if they occur. You will work with the rest of
the displays team to deliver Beluga training, health, husbandry, enrichment and
husbandry training, pool and life support management.
As part of the
animal care team, you will interact with the whales every day and will be
supported by world renowned specialists in marine welfare and behaviour. Your
immediate focus will be helping the whales to acclimatise to their new
surroundings, as well as helping to support their weight gain, ensuring they
put on extra blubber to keep them insulated against the colder conditions for
when they are released in to the stunning natural semi-free enclosure in
Klettsvik Bay. Therefore, you will be responsible for the daily cleaning and
maintenance of the sanctuary and its surroundings.
As directed, you
will communicate as a marine expert on matters arising around the Beluga whales
or marine environment. You will also ensure completion of all record systems
within displays to comply with standards of operation and comply with local
legal requirements (e.g. Zoo Licence).
As a key member of
the displays team, life support system and intruder alarm call-out duties are
required and as such you will be a designated key holder.
This is a permanent
Full-Time role and includes working a regular, fair share of weekends.

About you
You’ll have a
genuine passion for the welfare of cetaceans and have experience of cetacean
training with operant conditioning, animal health, husbandry and behaviour.
Experience involving maintenance, plumbing and operation of large life support
systems would be an advantage. You’ll need a basic understanding of the
fundamentals of water chemistry as applied to an aquarium environment and be
able to quickly identify and resolve any environmental issues.
Ideally, you’ll have
a degree level qualification in animal care, marine biology or equivalent and a
valid Rescue SCUBA certification (or equivalent level) is preferred. You must
be able to pass a departmental swim test, which includes, but is not limited to
minimum requirements for treading water, breath holding, free diving and
endurance.
Actively engaging
with visitors to enhance the visitor experience, you will need to be a
confident communicator, giving our guests an inspirational and educational
experience. You will also have a good level of English Language and Excellent
interpersonal and influencing skills.
Salary
Up to 4,500,000.00
ISK per year (based on experience)
