zoological park in the heart of the beautiful Lake District is home to over 100
exotic and endangered species in beautiful naturalistic surroundings that bring
the visitor closer to nature.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a
full-time Animal Manager – Sections, to oversee and help implement our animal
programme and to ensure the delivery of our high standards of welfare. This
post will be hands on focussing principally working daily with the keeping team
to ensure best operational practice is consistent and maintained, that
enrichment, and other welfare programmes for the animals in the collection are
implemented and ensuring that individual and team training is continuous.
Responsible for the
coordination and day to day supervision of the animal team under the direction
of the Animal Director, to aid with recruitment but responsible for the
training of new employees therefor excellent communication, organisational and
people management skills are essential. The role is to ensure that the staff,
facilities and animals are managed to achieve excellence. Providing best practice husbandry,
contributing to our understanding of the biology of these species and
delivering attractive animal exhibits and meaningful encounters to our
visitors.

Supporting and
implementing the work of the Animal Director, the role will work closely with
the Animal Director, Animal Manager, Senior Keepers, and the Veterinary team to
implement the animal care programmes, monitoring to ensure expected standards
are maintained and providing training and support when necessary. Taking an
active role on developing the collection in line with the Zoo’s
masterplan.
THE PERSON
The successful
candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience of working with multiple
species represented at this collection at a senior level within a EAZA
accredited Zoo. Have an in-depth
understanding of the challenges faced today in a modern zoo; specifically, with
regards to husbandry, welfare, nutrition, and successful breeding programmes.
Strong leadership
and people management skills are essential with experience in dealing
effectively with team development, and a positive attitude towards hands on
mentoring and coaching junior managers and developing apprentices and trainees.
Located south of the
Lake District National Park and an hour away from the Yorkshire Dales National
Park, the position offers a rewarding experience and a chance to live in what
is arguably the most beautiful part of England.
This role is 40
hours per week on a rota basis, including some weekends and bank holidays as
required. All applicants must have right
