Zoo Keeper
Scotland
Amazonia is a small
tropical house near Motherwell in North Lanarkshire. We are seeking to employ a
dedicated zoo keeper within our team, on a varied hour contract, working
amongst a variety of taxa, including marmosets, tamarins, bats, kinkajou,
birds, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and fish, working to high welfare
and husbandry standards.
The ideal candidate
will be highly motivated and passionate about wildlife, with the skills
required to communicate this passion and knowledge directly to our visitors.
They must demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of modern zoo practices in
animal husbandry, diets and environmental enrichment, as well as an
understanding and knowledge of research, conservation and health and safety
practices.
The successful
candidate should have a minimum of 2 years experience working with animals in a
keeper role in a zoological garden and/or wildlife park and hold a Diploma in
Animal Management (DMZAA), or equivalent, or be prepared to complete this
course within a pre-agreed timeframe.
The position also
includes educational work, delivering tours to school groups, assisting on
occasional outreach visits and providing animal talks at enclosures, along with
interacting with our visitors.
Skills required:
- BSc (Hons) Zoology or related subject desirable
- A minimum of 2 years experience working within a zoological collection
- Motivated individual who can work alone and as part of a team
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Computer literate
- Wide knowledge of biology, ecology and captive requirements of animal species for which post is responsible
- Knowledge of tropical and rainforest flora would be preferred
- Applicant should be physically fit and able to work in a hot climate.
- Flexible approach to work and ability to work under pressure
- Full clean driving license
This is a variable
hour contract, with a minimum of 30 hours a week which includes working regular
weekends and bank holidays as well as being on call for out of hour's
emergencies and working sometimes early or late to meet business needs. For the
right candidate, the position has the potential to become full time (40 hour
week).
Excellent customer
service skills and a high understanding of safety within the work place are
also necessary.
