Tamaraw Research Officer
Job Description:
Primary Duties and
Responsibilities:
The Tamaraw Research
Officer will perform the following and other duties as assigned:
- Assist DAF Program Manager in the implementation of the MTDLP, especially in creating a single approach to Tamaraw research and monitoring across Mindoro. This will include, but not be limited to Department of Environment and Natural Resources / Tamaraw Conservation Program + Protected Area Office, other NGOs, local and national academes, Global Wildlife Conservation, and the IUCN Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group.
- Manage foreign and/or Philippine MSc student projects, including help in selecting them, jointly designing field and statistical methods, implementation, analysis and write-up.
- With partners, design and implement an non invasive occupancy survey / population assessment method for the Tamaraw population in Mounts Iglit Baco National Park.
- With partners, design and implement population survey and monitoring programs for remnant populations of Tamaraw across Mindoro.
- Analyze the population dynamics of the Mounts Iglit-Baco National Park Tamaraw population from existing mutli-year count data and recent studies, surveys and assessments.
- Assess the accuracy of current annual Tamaraw population count methods.
- Support analysis of camera-trap data from WWF Ph and DAF/TCP.
- Facilitate the collation of time series habitat data and analyses of temporal changes to Tamaraw habitat availability.
- Facilitate a botanical study to investigate differences in resource availability inside and outside of the core Tamaraw distribution along with a tamaraw diet analysis.
- Facilitate a study of the impact of habitat management and on the sources of disturbance on Tamaraw distribution (poaching, hunting, burning activities…).
Qualifications:
- Commitment to and passion for Conservation.
- Masters or PhD degree required in a relevant field.
- Two years of experience in wildlife research and/or biodiversity conservation project.
- Demonstrated ability to work in different countries and cultures, especially Asia.
- Ability and interest to travel and work to remote field sites with local team and indigenous communities.
- Strong communications skills (writing, editing, correspondence, and public speaking).
Duty Station:
Office of the
D’ABOVILLE Foundation in Manila and Mindoro in cooperation with the Tamaraw
Conservation Program and Protected Area Office in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro,
Philippines.
Salary and Benefits:
A monthly living
stipend of US$ 950 will be provided, along with:
One return flight
(up to US$ 800)
International
travel/medical insurance for 12 months (up to US$ 600)
Cost of visa for 12
months
Budget allowance for
domestic transportations, overnights in Manila and necessities
Accommodation in
Mindoro
12 month renewable
contract
