The Lakes Aquarium is looking for a confident and enthusiastic person to join our Displays team as a Senior Aquarist. This is a key role in providing the highest standard of animal husbandry, as well as providing visitors with a fun and educational experience.

 

Excellent customer service skills and experience working within a public aquarium are essential, along with the confidence to talk to visitors on both a one to one and group basis.

 

The Senior Aquarist is responsible for the welfare, production, development and overall maintenance of mammal, reptile, fish and other displays at the Lakes Aquarium, in accordance with the Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice (SSSMZP).

 

This role is split into a number of different sections - responsibility of the displays area including life support systems, veterinary and livestock, interpretation and theming, record keeping, finance, personnel, and health and safety. There is an element of management required for this position as the aquarists will report to the senior aquarist, with the senior aquarist reporting to the Curator & Maintenance Manager.

 

The aquarium mainly comprises of a diverse collection of freshwater fish from around the world, as well as marine species, otters, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and birds.

 

You will ideally have an Undergraduate Degree in Marine Biology or other zoological related subject, and have experience in aquatic animal care in a professional aquarium environment.

Requirements

 

·         A Bachelor's degree, preferably in a Biological Science, or completion of a vocational diploma program in Animal Welfare and Husbandry, or equivalent combination of education and experience

 

·         At least one year experience in aquarium fish keeping, preferably in a public aquarium or professional environment

 

·         Valid driver's licence
