Hanwell Zoo - 3 or 6 month Industrial Placement

 

Hanwell Zoo is an established Zoological organisation well known locally and within the industry. We run award winning Conservation Education and equitable engagement programmes, participate in a number of breeding programmes, are active members of zoo associations and are very community and conservation minded.

 

An industrial placement at Hanwell Zoo is well suited for those looking to develop their animal management skills, get a feel for the industry and what it's like to work in an operating zoo, and gain the essential experience often required to become a Zookeeper.


Our team is well positioned and experienced to demonstrate all aspects of zookeeping within our diverse collection. Each day, you will be given hands-on, practical experience in all aspects of zookeeping life and have tangible opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge.


The Position

Duration: 3 or 6 months, starting in April 2021

Hours: 35 hours a week
Time: 08:30 - 17:30 (inclusive of breaks)
Days: 5 days a week – over a 7-day week period
Place: Hanwell Zoo, Church Road, London, W7 3BP

This is an unpaid position and successful applicants must provide their own transport to and from the zoo. There is no accommodation available with this position.


The applicant must be:
Available 5 days a week for a continuous period of 3 or 6 months, including one weekend day per week.
Aged 18 or over
Independent, or be accompanied by a carer
Proactive and enthusiastic about conservation and animal management.
 

This 3-6 month volunteer placement will provide comprehensive experience in the following principles:
Husbandry: Caring for and conserving over 60 diverse species.
Nutrition: Health, diet preparation and designing diets plans.
Horticulture: Designing and maintaining green spaces within the zoo.

Administration: Record keeping, legislation and animal transfers.
Visitor Services: Conservation Education, visitor management, equitable engagement and social media.
