Bear Manager -
Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre
Join a dedicated
team in the rehabilitation and ongoing care of over 160 rescued Asiatic black
and Malayan sun bears at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.
A highly motivated,
experienced, and dedicated animal professional is sought, to join our Bear and
Vet Team, located at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, Tam Dao National Park,
approximately 90 minutes from the capital Hanoi.
In this exciting
role, the position holder will be responsible for overseeing teams of local
bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of rescued
bears.
This position
involves working closely with Bear Team Supervisors and liaising with the
veterinary team to manage various daily operations. The Bear Manager will
report directly to the Bear and Vet Team Director.
Responsibilities
§ Co-coordinating
various daily operations:
o Animal
care and management;
o Maintenance
and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
o Ordering
stock as required;
o Maintaining
bear behavior records & databases.
§ As
needed, overseeing the quarantine of newly rescued bears.
§ As
needed, participate in the hand-rearing and care of newly rescued, orphaned
cubs.
§ As
needed, manage the integration of bears into mixed sex, social groups.
§ Operant
conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical,
behavioural and management requirements.
§ Report
writing, including producing material used by the Communications Team for
social media and the Animals Asia website.
§ Human
resources:
o Capacity
building and training with the local bear care team;
o Staff
evaluations;
o Ensuring
morale is maintained within bear care staff;
o Identifying
and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.
Requirements
§ University
degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal welfare, animal behaviour or
related field.
§ Three
to five years work experience in a captive wild animal facility or similar
working environment.
§ Computer
literacy, including Excel.
§ Strong
management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently
§ Fluent
in English.
§ A
good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live
and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local
staff in a rural area of Northern Vietnam.
§ Patience
and willingness to work within a different culture are essential.
§ Suitable
candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.
Appointment is paid,
full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.
