inspiring the next generation about wildlife in our parks to protecting chimpanzees
in the Ugandan rainforest; looking after some of the world’s most endangered
species to saving the Scottish wildcat, RZSS is making a huge difference and we
need your help to continue to grow.
The role
As a member of the
Living Collections team at Edinburgh Zoo, it is essential that the successful
candidate has experience of working in a supervisory or managerial role,
specifically where the stock is predominately primates. It is a requirement of this role that you
will have passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or a
directly equivalent zoo husbandry qualification. A working knowledge of ZIMS, SPARKS and other
zoo management systems would be desirable.
The successful candidate will be required to cover all aspects of
managing the section in the absence of the Team Leader, this includes the
management of staff and the facilitation of agreed research liaison activities
on behalf of the University of St Andrews and the Scottish Primate Research
Group.
Who we are looking for
To
operate effectively in this role, practical experience in a zoo or
animal-related environment is essential and experience of working with a range
of animal taxon groups is desirable.
Experience working with category 1 dangerous animals is essential and
previous experience working with chimpanzees is desirable. You must also have up-to-date basic knowledge
and understanding of zoo legislation and best practice, along with a sound
basis of practical knowledge and skill about good animal management including
dietary knowledge. Proven success in
animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive
reinforcement training is very desirable.
This
is a full-time permanent position where the working hours are 37.5 hours per
week and the post involves weekend and occasional evening work.
