(New, Full-Time, Permanent Role)

Monarto Zoo is part of Zoos SA and is South Australia’s open range zoo
located 70 km from Adelaide’s CBD. It is gaining a well-deserved reputation
as a leader in conservation of endangered species and is in the process of
further enhancing the visitor experience with several projects in
development at both Monarto and Adelaide Zoos. Zoos SA has a progressive
conservation theme based on teamwork and a commitment to achieve the
Society’s Aim and Objectives. Applications are invited from Keepers
experienced in Primate husbandry, particularly Great Apes.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Initially, the successful applicant will be responsible for coordination and
day to day management of the new Chimpanzee exhibit to open in December
2008. This complex comprises of a 3000+ square metre exhibit yard as well
as over 900 cubic metres of internal holding areas including a ‘playroom’
and connecting dens. Once the exhibit is completed you will be responsible
for the daily management of the facility, the animal husbandry and the staff
in consultation with the Assistant Curator and other senior staff. You will
liaise with other institutions and zoo staff, and help develop the protocol
for and undertaking the introduction of chimpanzees, setting up and
maintaining comprehensive training and enrichment programs and in future
breeding programs. Currently other duties will include the management of a
breeding group of Colobus monkeys and a single sex group of Lemurs as well
as public presentations and conducting tours. Future plans include a social
group of baboons with potential of addition of other primates to the
collection.

Experience and Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a minimum of Certificate III in Zoo Keeping (or
equivalent) and be able to demonstrate significant experience in primate
husbandry and introductions. You will need to evidence excellent
observational skills, training (operant conditioning) and enrichment
knowledge and have developed and implemented such programs. Great ape
experience is essential, as is a commitment to Occupational Health and
Safety and an ability to manage complex exhibits.

Excellent communications skills are required due to the complexity of the
exhibit and the introductions. You will need to be organised, able to
maintain accurate records, be self-motivated and able to show leadership and
ability to initiate protocols (safety, husbandry, daily routine) for this
new complex, in consultation with Assistant Curator and other senior staff.

The site is large and vehicles are required to travel on the site. As such a
current car driver’s licence is essential.

Salary:
The grade will be commensurate with experience and salary is in accordance
with the Society’s Staff Agreement 2006.

This post will commence November 2008.
