DESCRIPTION
Summary
Creates, promotes,
and conducts interactive educational programs, on and off-site, using live
animals and animal biofacts; leads and manages the volunteer program;
responsible for the daily animal care and handling of education animals; this
manager has primary responsibility for the formulation, development, and
implementation of all educational programs and animal information at the
sanctuary. The Animal Ark mission emphasizes education as a primary function
and this individual, therefore, plays a major role in developing this aspect at
our institution.
Responsibilities
• Develops
educational curricula formulated to serve regional school districts and
students ranging from four to eighteen years of age, (K-12)
• Aligns the
sanctuary’s educational programs with the standards of learning developed by
the State of Nevada Department of Education, (NVACSS)
• Develops
informational materials, collaborates with staff designing signage and graphics
that reflects the natural history and science of the animal collection
• Coordinates and
develops educational events at the Ark for the general public
• Performs
educational encounters for schools and various other organizations
• Actively engages
patrons with education outreach animals
• Schedules field
trips and facilitates educational programming for groups on site
• Creates activity
tours, scavenger hunts and work sheets for groups and specific programs which
addresses all educational outreach programs, on site camps, informational
encounters, as well as supporting home school curriculum
• Provides husbandry
and enrichment for the animals in the education collection
• Researches animals
for programs, lessons, volunteer hand-outs, etc.
• Develops factual
and educational information for the general public and the schools served by
the sanctuary
• Recruits, trains,
schedules and manages the volunteers and develops the docent program to further
educational opportunities on and off grounds
• Assists in
training the docents to conduct tours, lectures, and animal encounters as
appropriate for the general public, schools, and other groups
Additional Responsibilities:
• A strong ability
to work in a team-oriented atmosphere while maintaining excellent independent
work skills. Great interpersonal skills and a commitment to provide outstanding
educational programs is a must
• Serves as the
principal contact at the Ark for all educational and outreach activities
• Required to work a
flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed for program needs
and special events
• Required to work
in a variety of weather conditions
• Performs other
duties as requested
Administration
• Develops and
implements a short-term and long-term educational master plan for the Animal
Ark
• Supervises the
Ark’s library and biofact collections
• Assists with the
development and promotion of good community relations and awareness through
speaking engagements, interviews, answering phone inquiries, etc. and dealing
effectively with the public at the Ark
• Works with the
management team developing special events, promotions, and media relations as
required including some weekends and evenings
• Contributes to
grant writing as required
• Coordinates the
development of the budget for education and outreach programs with the Animal
Curator and Executive Director
• Manages and
coordinates educational and cultural programs at the Ark
• Organizes and
manages finances relevant to the sanctuary’s education and outreach programs
• Develops and
implements formal and informal conservation education programs and
opportunities, both in-house and outreach, for all ages and educational levels
• Establishes and
oversees collaborative programs with schools and other organizations, including
regional community colleges and universities
• Performs related
duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND PRE-REQUISITES
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Bachelor’s degree
in education, zoology, biology, wildlife management, environmental science or a
related applicable field
• A minimum of one
year’s management experience working in an educational capacity in a school,
refuge, aquarium, nature center or similar organization
• Knowledge of
Nevada academic standards for math and science (NVACSS)
• Ability to handle,
care for and train a variety of domestic and exotic animals
• Red Cross
certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid
• Ability to
maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations
• Ability to work
well with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and/or educators
• Excellent
organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
• Must have good
time management and the ability to effectively multi-task
• Two to four years
minimum experience working with volunteers
• Computer skills
including Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Physical demands
include balance, standing, kneeling, crouching, walking, reaching, grasping,
feeling and finger dexterity.
• Capable of
lifting, pushing and pulling 50 pounds, and handling animal carriers
• Must possess a
valid Nevada State driver’s license and maintain insurance
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Status: Full time,
Exempt, Salaried
Pay Range: $33,280 –
$37,440 ($35,000 is considered midrange)
Direct Report:
Animal Curator (in Curator’s absence, the Executive Director)
Vacation, sick
leave, and stipend for medical
