This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in the development and expansion of the Animal Management Unit and School Zoo at Bede’s.

You will work under the direction of the Zoo Manager, in order to perform the daily task required for the collections care. Our collection currently consists of 170+ individuals of 40 different species ranging from Squirrel Monkeys and Meerkats to Stick Insects and snails. In the absence of the Zoo Manager you will report to the Head of Animal Management.

The AMU Keeper will embrace the department’s objectives of providing a first class educational experience for our students and to provide a centre of excellence in terms of the welfare for the animals in our care.

Candidates should be educated to at least Level 3 in a relevant vocational subject or a biological science (biology, animal management, animal care, zoo management etc.), and be experienced with a range of exotic and domestic mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Candidates should also possess the practical skills necessary for both husbandry and enclosure maintenance.

A flexible approach to a varied workload, real enthusiasm for the animals you work with and an aptitude for working with teenagers are essential. Experience in supervising young people would be advantageous.

Additional Information:

This role is a part time, casual role with flexibility in the days to be worked.

Must be willing to work some evenings (open evenings etc.), occasional nights (in an emergency), weekends and holidays and an occasional 24-hour emergency on-call when the Zoo Manager is absent.

Holding a current driving licence is essential.
