Keeper Primates

Keeper Primates

Auckland Zoo

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland is a global city with stunning scenery, wonderful beaches and sub-tropical islands. It is also a city with one of the most progressive zoos in the world. At Auckland Zoo, wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability is at the very heart of what we do.  Our mission is “to bring people together to build a future for wildlife” and we do this by demonstrating exceptional care for wildlife, inspiring our visitors to value wildlife, conserving wildlife in the wild and building a high-performance organisation.

An ambitious capital development programme was recently initiated, one which will deliver new infrastructure across the zoo and a remarkable transformation to much of the site – this is our #FutureZoo.

This is a great opportunity to join the animal care and conservation team at Auckland Zoo and be part of an organisation that aims to focus the Zoo's resources to benefit conservation, and provide exciting visitor experiences, which inspire and empower people to take positive action for wildlife and the environment.

As a Primates Keeper, you will work as part of a team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of our primates including great apes.

He kōrero mōu: About you

We are looking for someone who is adaptable and open minded with a desire to push themselves to benefit conservation and animal welfare. You will have proven experience in the management of primates, including great apes and a recognised qualification in captive animal management and/or zoology/biology. You ideally will have a minimum of 3 years' experience working with primates, along with an excellent understanding of the natural history of primates.

You will also have:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the conservation of species and ecosystems.
  • Have a track record of innovative husbandry including development of training and enrichment programmes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to positively contribute to a team environment.
  • Driver's licence and the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
  • A thorough understanding of the role nutrition plays in the welfare of zoo animals.
  • An in-depth understanding of the 5 domains of animal welfare

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

This is a full-time role, working on a rotating roster system including weekends and public holidays.  A high level of energy and physical fitness will enable you to meet the daily challenges of the role. We are a fun and enthusiastic team, who thrive in this challenging and rewarding area and who work in innovative areas on an international level.

If you have proven primate husbandry experience and a desire to really achieve conservation outcomes through your zoo-based career, then this is the opportunity you have been waiting for.
