Senior Carnivore
Keeper
Howletts Wild Animal
Park, based in Kent is seeking a passionate, experienced, hardworking and motivated animal
keeper to work with a small team of enthusiastic and likeminded keepers on our carnivore section.
Howletts works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to the conservation
of rare and endangered animals through breeding and reintroduction programmes.
For the right
candidate, this position offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide
range of species from Honey
badgers to Sumatran tigers and contribute to the breeding programmes of species such as
Asian wild dogs and Clouded leopards.
The Role
This position is
full time, working five days out of seven, including weekends and bank
holidays. The successful applicant
will be expected to undertake general husbandry duties, conduct basic enclosure
furnishing, maintenance tasks and record keeping. You will have the opportunity
to develop your
professional skills and abilities, and to contribute towards future plans on
the section.
The Person
We are looking for
someone with proven previous experience gained in a similar main stream zoological
collection, preferably working with carnivores. Most importantly, you will have
excellent standards of
husbandry and welfare and a good taxonomic understanding of carnivores. You
must be confident in
engaging with the public, familiar with basic computer software packages and
have good verbal
communication skills. We are looking for a team player who is also confident to
work alone. Ideally, you
will have gained and animal management qualification or be prepared to
undertake one. The
role is physically demanding so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness. You will
also need to be comfortable working at height in order to perform enclosure maintenance duties.
A valid full UK driving licence is essential.
