ZOOLOGICAL DIRECTOR
Job description and
major duties:
Bioparc Valencia
currently has a vacancy for a Zoological Director (“Director Técnico” in
Spanish). Reporting to the General Director, the successful candidate will be
responsible for:
o Management
of a team of veterinarians, animal keepers and aquarists.
o Oversee
all aspects of collection planning, animal care and husbandry at Bioparc
Valencia, including breeding programs (programs both in place and in the
future), veterinary care, arrivals and departures of animals.
o Ensure
excellent enclosure and landscape presentation, which is the key feature of
Bioparc Valencia.
o Supervise
the proper use and maintenance of machinery, equipment and life supporting
systems.
Requirements:
ü We
are looking for someone with extensive knowledge and expertise in animal
husbandry and management, with a minimum of 10 years at a recognized zoological
collection, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant management experience at a
senior/executive level including planning, budgeting and human resource
management/supervision.
ü A
scientific background would be desirable. An overall understanding of the role
of the modern zoo is essential, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other
relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice. The candidate
will participate in EAZA and other professional organizations.
ü Leadership
qualities; experience of supervising a team and be able to manage and
prioritize a diverse workload within a dynamic environment.
ü Fluency
in or advanced knowledge of Spanish. Competence in both oral and written
English desirable.
ü Capable
of working with relevant computer software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
Competence in the use of ZIMS software desirable.
ü The
position is full time, 40 hours per week, with weekend duties shared amongst
relevant staff according to the organizational needs of Bioparc Valencia.

The Organization:
o Bioparc
Valencia is located the former riverbed of the river Turia, part of a large and
unique urban park crossing the city of Valencia. Bioparc Valencia is the last
large European zoo, which opened to the public on February 2008. Bioparc
Valencia has been designed under the concept of “zoo immersion”, so that
visitors become immersed in naturalistic habitats of the animals. Due to the
extraordinary quality of replicated elements such as rocks and trees, Bioparc
Valencia has become a worldwide referent for this kind of exhibits. Following
ecosystems have been recreated: Madagascar, Equatorial Africa, African
Wetlands, and the African Savannah. The exhibits keep social groups with a
behavior as similar as possible to the natural behavior.
o Bioparc
Valencia is a full EAZA member. The animal collection focuses on African
species, with a total of 150 species taking part in over 40 European breeding
programs (EEP/ESB). Taxa include primates (including great apes), ungulates
(including a herd of 2.6 elephants in protected contact), carnivores, other
mammals, birds and reptiles.
