Bird Keeper

Newquay Zoo is part
of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, comprising Paignton Zoo, Living
Coasts, Slapton Ley and two urban nature reserves. Newquay Zoo opened in 1969, and has become
one of the country’s top Zoos, contributing towards ground breaking and
innovative conservation programmes. It
has also proved itself to be one of the best visitor attractions in the South
West.
A position has
become available for the post of Bird Keeper at Newquay Zoo. The post requires a hardworking, dedicated,
enthusiastic and reliable individual, who will be expected to work on their own
initiative and as part of a team, and be committed to the ongoing development
of the zoo.
The ideal candidate
should possess at least 2 years animal keeping experience within a BIAZA or
EAZA recognised institution, and will have preferably completed, and passed,
the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA).
Duties will include
attending to the husbandry requirements of a variety avian species, as directed
by a Senior Keeper or the Head Keeper.
In addition, the ideal candidate with also have knowledge, and an
interest, in the range of taxa in our Tropical House, as they would be expected
to cover the section on an occasional basis.
Daily observations of individual animals, completion of relevant
records, and having the ability to answer visitors’ questions as required, in a
courteous and informative manner, are fundamental for this position.
Hours of work are
38.75 hours per week, which may include weekends and Bank Holidays.
