Animal Care Manager

Animal Care Manager

Wellington Zoo

At Wellington Zoo, we are the Zoo with the biggest heart: a creative, innovative and progressive zoo. We are a team of powerfully passionate individuals who are champions for the welfare of all animals - within and beyond the boundaries of the Zoo. We are guided by our kaupapa, “Me Tiaki, Kia Ora!” - we must look after our environment, so all things will flourish.

Wellington Zoo is dedicated to giving our animals a really good life. Animals at Wellington Zoo are treated with dignity and respect, their quality of life needs are met, and Wellington Zoo is positioned as a leader in the zoo profession: an advocate and an authority on animal welfare best practice.

We have a rare vacancy for our Animal Care Manager role on a permanent, full-time basis. This pivotal role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and the successful candidate will be responsible for the overall leadership and effective management of the four husbandry sections in our Animal Care Team. The role is crucial to ensuring that we lead the way with the highest standards of husbandry skills, animal welfare outcomes, species management planning and innovative habitat design for the animals in our care. This is also the biggest team in the Zoo, and the Animal Care Manager needs to be an incredible people leader, with four Animal Care Team Leaders as direct reports and a wider team of 25.4 FTE Keepers. The role plays a critical role in managing the training and ongoing professional development of Animal Care staff, in leading initiatives and experiences that inspire our visitors, and supporting the Zoo’s strategic priorities.
