The Oklahoma City
Zoo is seeking a highly team oriented individual to join our marine mammal
team. The Oklahoma City region enjoys a robust economy, a low cost of living,
is centered among a biologically rich area, and hosts a variety of academic and
educational institutions.
The successful
candidate must possess exceptional interpersonal skills and be comfortable
working in a fast paced environment that propels an innovative and educational
pinniped program facilitating the zoo’s mission. Responsibilities will include
implementing all husbandry, operant conditioning, enrichment, and exhibit
cleaning protocols and participating in veterinary procedures, formal and
informal guest interactions, and educational talks.
The Noble Aquatic
Center is a facility consisting of over 400,000 gallons dedicated to 0.1
Pacific harbor seal plus a diverse group of 3.2 California sea lions, of which,
one male is geriatric and visually impaired while the remaining are in an
active breeding group. The Noble Aquatic Center also incorporates a 1,800 seat
marine mammal stadium and a diverse collection of more than 120 species of fish
and aquatic invertebrate species in both freshwater and saltwater.
Candidates must have
a minimum experience equivalent to one year full time animal care/animal
husbandry including public animal demonstrations, demonstrated knowledge and
experience using operant conditioning and training techniques, basic knowledge
of life support components, and marine mammal water quality parameters.
Candidates must be SCUBA certified or willing to become certified within 6
months of hire. High school diploma is required with preference given to a
Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely
related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. This is a
full-time position and selected candidate must have the ability to lift 50
pounds. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oklahoma motor
vehicle operator's license and pass a Driver's History check to operate Zoo
vehicles. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check, a
physical examination, and a drug test and have the ability to pass annual TB
tests. The salary is $12.29/hr minimum to $14.75/hr mid-range with excellent
benefits.
