Harewood House
The Harewood House
Trust is an independent charitable trust which manages and maintains Harewood
House and its immediate grounds, including the well renowned Bird Garden by
opening to the public as a visitor attraction and events venue and attracting
over 140,000 visitors a year.
Since 1970 the Bird
Garden has promoted an understanding of birds and their environment through
preservation, conservation and education. It is currently home to 43 different
species of bird.
In 2016 Harewood
House Trust opened its Farm Experience as an added visitor attraction and
educational facility which is home to six different species of domestic
livestock.
The Role
A vacancy has arisen
to join our small and dedicated team, which will require the successful
applicant to oversee the husbandry, breeding management and maintenance of the
species and their enclosures on a designated section within the Bird Garden, as
well as covering other areas in the absence of other team members, in
particular the domestic livestock in the Farm Experience.
The successful
applicant must have at least two years’ experience in a zoo collection, or
similar environment, ideally with avian species. An animal care, behaviour or
conservation related qualification is also essential coupled with excellent
record keeping and animal health monitoring skills. In addition to this an
understanding of in-situ and ex-situ conservation is required, along with a
dedication to high standards of animal welfare, particularly environmental
enrichment. Experience in artificial
incubation and hand rearing of a variety of avian species would also be
desirable.
The post-holder must
be confident with public speaking as they will be required to deliver visitor
talks and interactive sessions including school groups.
Candidates must be
punctual, have attention to detail and be able to work to work to tight
deadlines.
This is a full-
time, permanent position based at Harewood, Leeds. Flexible working is
required, including working weekends and bank holidays
